Use of Social Media in Primary Schools
Social media is now the number one activity on the internet. Schools are taking advantage of this resource by using it in a number of ways, including communicating with parents, using Twitter as a learning tool, and blogging.
Simon Lewis, principal of Carlow Educate Together, believes children’s development can be improved by using social media through means such as discussion groups and interacting with others.
This offers the opportunity for students to get more involved in a topic and gives them an additional platform to have their say. A review, commissioned by the Schools Secretary, suggests proposals have been put forward for schools to begin teaching students to use social media, however, these have been strongly criticized, with the fact that these websites are simply not for this purpose being the main reason for opposition.
